Strawberry

The strawberry shape is the pear turned upside down, with a large, top-heavy bust. Avoid spaghetti-strap sundresses, tight turtlenecks and designs running horizontally across the chest. Wrap dresses crisscross the chest and gently flair at the hips, calling attention from the bust. Any jacket gives the illusion of a smaller bust, especially double-breasted jackets that fasten low on the front.

Tank styles with wide straps draw attention upward, away from the chest, and look especially stunning when paired with a jacket. Another good option is the empire-waist dress, which gathers right below the bust.

Apple

Apple shapes are round in the waist. A-line dresses and coat dresses that form a straight line across the waist de-emphasize bulges. Another excellent choice is the shirt dress with buttons running from top to bottom, drawing the eye up and down. Shoulder pads are back in style, and they give apple shapes the illusion of an hourglass figure.

Rectangle

Rectangle-shaped women have straight figures and need to add curves. If you’re a rectangle, you’re one of the few types who can wear form-fitting dresses everywhere, even to work. Figure-hugging sheath dresses and short cocktail dresses that narrow through the thighs also give the illusion of rounded hips. Retro shirtwaist dresses with flared skirts and belted waists give rectangle shapes the appearance of curves.
